The software used in this class is free, or open source, software. Because it is free, it available on a large number of platforms. Below are links to help you find software for common operating systems, if you want to install it yourself. You can also use the software on the lab computers remotely. An alternative to all the Win32 options below is to use the Linux software in the Cygwin Environment.

TeX / LaTeX

There are different versions of LaTeX available for each platform.
  • Linux -- We are using teTeX (based on Web2C) on the lab computers. It probably came packaged with your distribution. Here is the teTex home page.
  • Macintosh -- Almost all Unix/Linux software can be compiled and run on Mac OS X. Use teTeX (see mac-tex). Alternatively, if you're using Mac OS 10.2 or higher, TeXShop is a nice and free program available here. Older Mac OS don't seem to have free software ported, only shareware. See mac-tex.
  • Win32 -- MikTeX and pTeX are available for win32. Here is the MikTeK project page.
